What Makes A Great Leader

When I have a conversation about leadership, people often refer to their boss, a political leader, or someone who is leading change in their community or industry. They refer to famous figures such as Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Tim Cook, or even Bill Gates.

They admire their boldness, their risk-taking abilities, and are hypnotized by their vivid stories about the future they look to create and have created. People are obsessed with every word that comes from their mouths, and how wittingly they answer the naysayers. From their energy and charisma that hook a multitude of people towards them, they have the power to move nations.

I always ask myself, what could I learn from these inspiring leaders to become one of them.

Here are the top 3 things I’ve learned from these influencers thus far.

1. Great leaders find a way to get it done.

No excuses. When we hear excuses from others, we often criticize people because of them, however, when we are the ones making the excuses it is a bit harder, to be honest with ourselves.

“It’s too hard.”

“it’s too difficult.”

“I don’t have time.”

“I don’t have the resources.”

Great leaders do not let anything stop them.

2. Great leaders take great precautions with their environment.

Influence. Power. Money.

These three things are what many people strive and desire to achieve throughout their entire career.

Who or what they surround themselves with can make or break them. As human beings, we witness the habits of others and tend to judge based on how they manage in their day to day life.

Having a balanced and supportive environment is key to achieving these goals but to many is not attainable.

3. Great leaders find comfort in uncomfortable situations.

Do not be afraid of stepping into unfamiliar territory. The best way to grow is through new experiences.

By letting your fears paralyze you, you reach a stagnant position in your career. Have that difficult conversation, take that leap of faith, step out of your comfort zone because if there is one thing great leaders are known for is rolling with the punches.
